FOREIGNER'S GUIDE TO OSAKA LIVE HOUSES
Everything a non-Japanese visitor needs to attend a show at Namba BEARS, Hokage, Pangea, or any of Osaka's 46 live houses — tickets, cash, etiquette, key phrases.
Buying the ticket
Three ways tickets are sold
A. Major ticket play-guides — for mid-tier and bigger shows.
| Service | Where |
|---|---|
| eplus (e+) | eplus.jp / FamilyMart Famiport |
| Ticket Pia | t.pia.jp / FamilyMart |
| Lawson Ticket (L-tike) | l-tike.com / Lawson Loppi |
| Zaiko | zaiko.io (indie-friendly, foreign cards OK) |
B. Direct reservation (WEBチケット予約 / メール予約 / 取り置き) — the underground default. The band or venue holds your name at the door; you pay cash on entry.
C. Same-day at the door (当日券, tōjitsu-ken) — usually ¥500 more than advance. Cash only. Sold-out is rare except for special bills.
Reservation message template
はじめまして。[日付] の [バンド名] のライブを予約したいです。 名前: [Your name] 人数: [Number of people] よろしくお願いします。 Hi, I'd like to reserve [N] ticket(s) for [Band] on [date]. Name: [Your name]. Thank you.
The drink ticket
Every Japanese live house charges a separate ¥500–¥700 drink fee on top of the ticket. This isn't a scam — it's how Japanese liquor licensing works. The venue is officially a bar that happens to host live music.
- Pay the drink fee at the door — get a coin or token ticket (ドリンクチケット).
- Take it to the bar inside — between sets, after the show, whenever.
- Exchange for a drink — beer, soft drink, water, oolong tea.
Bring cash
Most Osaka live houses are strictly cash-only for door fees, drinks, and merch. ATMs at 7-Eleven and Lawson accept international cards.
- Ticket: ¥2,000–¥4,500 (indie / underground)
- Drink Fee: ¥600
- Merch (T-shirt / LP / CD): ¥1,500–¥3,500
- Coin Lockers: ¥400–¥700
Bring small bills (¥1,000 notes). Door staff struggle breaking ¥10,000 bills during busy doors.
Doors, start time, and merch
You will see two distinct times on every flyer:
- 開場 (kaijō) — doors open
- 開演 (kaien) — first performance begins
Doors usually open 30 minutes before show time. Start times in Japan are extremely precise — a 19:00 start means the opening band strikes their first chord at 19:00 sharp.
Order of entry: Larger venues call in attendees by ticket number — listen for 「〇番から〇番までお入りください」.
Merch (物販, bussan): Sold by bands directly at a table near the entrance or lounge. Cash only. The musicians often staff their own merch booth — buying a record or t-shirt is the best way to support them directly.
Inside the venue
- No loud chatter during sets. Cheers and applause are welcome; talking during quiet songs is taboo.
- Phone etiquette: Snap a quick photo if allowed, but keep your screen down and do not record whole songs unless expressly authorized.
- Personal space: Even in intense punk or metal shows, Japanese pits are respectful. Read the room and watch out for people around you.
- Audience engagement: Japanese fans listen with intense focus and erupt between songs. Don't mistake rapt attention for lack of enthusiasm.
- Avoid moving across the front row mid-song. If moving, walk along the sides or rear of the room.
After the show
- Musicians often hang out around the bar or merch booth. A simple 「よかったです (yokatta desu — that was awesome)」 goes a long way.
- Last train (終電, shūden): Osaka subways stop around 00:00 midnight; JR slightly later. Always check transit directions before late sets.
- Late-night food & drink: Izakaya in Amerikamura, Namba, Umeda, and Juso stay lively till dawn.
