June is one of Osaka's best months for live music. The rainy season keeps people indoors and the venues fill up — bands on summer tours make their Osaka stop, local acts play release shows before the festival circuit takes over, and the underground rooms that went quiet over Golden Week come back loud. Expect heavy programming across Namba and Shinsaibashi all month. If you are in Osaka for any part of June, there will be something worth catching.

Namba BEARS is the most important small venue in Japan. That is not hyperbole — ask anyone who has been playing music in Osaka for more than ten years, and BEARS will come up within the first few sentences. Founded under the influence of Seiichi Yamamoto of the Boredoms, the room has hosted Ruins Alone, noise acts, hardcore bills, experimental one-offs, and local punk bands playing their fifth show. It holds around 150 people in a basement with no phone signal, one toilet, and a PA system turned up to a volume that makes the floor vibrate. The drink ticket costs ¥600 and you should bring earplugs. Entry is cash only, typically ¥2,500–¥3,500. If you go to one live house in Osaka, make it this one.
